The best time of year to seal a driveway on the Central Coast.

Sealer does not care what month it is. It cares about surface temperature, moisture in the slab, the dew point and whether it rains in the next 24 hours. On this coast those four things line up best in autumn. Here is the honest season-by-season breakdown.

The short answer.

Autumn, roughly March to May, is the best window to seal a driveway on the Central Coast. The summer storm pattern has eased, the slab is still warm enough to cure a sealer properly, and the humidity has dropped off. Early spring, September to November, is the second-best run. Both give you mild surface temperatures, lower humidity and a far better chance of the 24 to 48 dry hours a sealer needs to cure. Mid-summer is the worst window, and winter is workable but on a shorter clock.

The four conditions that actually matter.

Every sealer datasheet you will ever read comes down to the same four conditions, and none of them are “month of the year”. They are the reason we sometimes turn up, put a meter on your slab and reschedule.

  • Surface temperature: most sealers want the slab between roughly 10°C and 30°C. Not the air, the concrete. A north-facing Central Coast driveway in January can be 25°C hotter than the air.
  • Slab moisture: the concrete has to be dry through, not just dry on top. We look for under about 5% moisture. A slab that has had 40mm of rain on it two days ago is still wet inside.
  • Dew point: the surface must sit at least 3°C above the dew point or the coat blushes milky. This is the one that kills winter afternoons and humid February mornings on the Coast.
  • Rain-free hours after: 24 hours minimum, ideally 48. On a coast that averages around 1,300mm a year, that is the gamble.

Season by season on this coast.

Autumn, March to May. The best run.

Days are still warm, the slab holds heat, humidity has dropped and the afternoon storm pattern has broken up. March and April on the Central Coast are our busiest sealing months and for good reason: you get a genuine eight to ten hour working window most days, and the seal has cured hard before the first proper east coast low arrives. The one catch is that autumn here is not actually our driest season on paper, so we still watch the radar carefully. It is the best balance, not a guarantee.

Winter, June to August. Workable, shorter clock.

Central Coast winters are mild by Australian standards and reasonably dry, so cold is rarely the blocker. Dew is. In the Erina and Narara valleys, cold air pools overnight and a slab can stay visibly damp until 9 or 10am, then start dewing again by 4pm. That leaves roughly a five-hour window. We work through winter constantly, we simply start later, finish earlier and meter the slab first. Penetrating sealers handle winter far better than topical ones because they soak in rather than forming a film that has to flash off.

Spring, September to November. Second-best.

Spring is genuinely good. The slab is warming, dew is retreating and the summer storms have not arrived. The only complication is pollen and leaf drop, which can land in a wet topical coat, so we prefer to keep spring topical work away from big gums and jacarandas or tarp the approach.

Summer, December to February. Avoid if you can.

Mid-summer is the worst window here, for two reasons. Afternoon thunderstorms are common on the Coast from December to February and a shower can wash an uncured coat straight off the slab. And a dark driveway at 2pm in January can sit above 50°C, which flashes the solvent out of a topical sealer far too fast and leaves a blotchy, milky finish. If a job has to happen in summer we work early mornings and watch the radar. Summer is fine for pressure cleaning and prep, which is half the job anyway.

Curing and traffic times.

Plan on 24 hours before light foot traffic and 48 to 72 hours before you drive a car onto it, with no rain for at least the first 24 hours. Penetrating silane and siloxane sealers are more forgiving because they soak in, they are usually rain-safe within about six hours. Topical acrylics and polyurethanes are the ones an unexpected shower ruins, and they are also the ones that need the full 72 hours before a hot tyre goes on them. Turning a car sharply on a coat that is only two days old is one of the most common ways a good seal gets scuffed in its first week. See our aftercare guide for the full first-month rules.

Salt exposure changes the calendar too.

If you are on the beachfront at Terrigal, Wamberal or Avoca, the season matters in a second way. Onshore salt spray settles on the slab constantly, so a driveway that has not been washed down properly in the days before sealing has a film of chloride on it that the sealer will simply lock in. We schedule beachfront work for calmer periods where we can and always wash and neutralise before the coat. A driveway a few kilometres back in the Wyong valley does not have that constraint.

New concrete has its own clock.

If your slab was poured recently, the calendar is set by the concrete, not the weather. A new concrete driveway needs a full 28-day cure before it can take a sealer, and often longer for a decorative finish. Sealing early traps moisture and the coat goes cloudy. That is covered properly on our new-build driveway sealing page.

Does the season change the price?

No. Our rates do not move with the season, a plain concrete penetrating seal is $6 to $11 per square metre year round, decorative concrete $12 to $22, pavers $9 to $18 and exposed aggregate $14 to $26. What changes is the wait. Autumn is our busiest run and bookings can be three to four weeks out, while a mid-winter or mid-summer job can often be scheduled inside the same week.

Worked example. A 60m² plain concrete driveway at Kariong, first seal, pressure cleaned and degreased then given a chloride-resistant penetrating seal: around $650 to $1,050 at 2026 rates, whether we do it in April or in July. Book it in April and you wait about a month; book it in July and we are usually there inside a week, but we start at 10am and are off the slab by 3pm. Full rates are on the pricing page and the surface detail is on our concrete sealing page.

So when should you actually book?

If your driveway is due, ring it in late summer for an autumn slot, or in late winter for a spring slot. If it is already failing, do not wait for the perfect season, a bare slab picking up salt and oil for another six months costs you more than a slightly compromised booking window. How long you get between coats is covered on our reseal frequency guide.

Timing questions.

When is the best time of year to seal a driveway on the Central Coast?

Autumn is the best window, roughly March to May, once the summer storms have eased but the slab is still warm enough to cure a sealer properly. Early spring, September to November, is the second-best run. Both give you mild surface temperatures, lower humidity and a far better chance of the 24 to 48 dry hours a sealer needs to cure.

Can you seal a driveway in winter on the Central Coast?

Yes, on the right day. Central Coast winters are mild and comparatively dry, so the problem is not cold, it is dew. In the Erina and Narara valleys a slab can stay damp until 9 or 10am and start dewing again by late afternoon, which cuts the working window to about five hours. We seal right through winter, we just start later, finish earlier, and check the slab with a moisture meter before the first coat goes on.

Why is mid-summer the worst time to seal a driveway here?

Two reasons. Afternoon thunderstorms are common on the Coast from December to February and a shower can wash an uncured coat straight off the slab. And a dark driveway at 2pm in January can sit above 50 degrees, which flashes the solvent out of a topical sealer far too fast and leaves a blotchy, milky finish. If a job has to happen in summer we work early mornings and watch the radar.

How much rain-free time does a freshly sealed driveway need?

Plan on 24 hours before light foot traffic and 48 to 72 hours before you drive a car onto it, with no rain for at least the first 24 hours. Penetrating silane and siloxane sealers are more forgiving because they soak in, they are usually rain-safe within about six hours. Topical acrylics and polyurethanes are the ones an unexpected shower ruins.

Does the time of year change what driveway sealing costs?

No. Our rates do not move with the season, a plain concrete penetrating seal is $6 to $11 per square metre year round. What changes is the wait. Autumn is our busiest run and bookings can be three to four weeks out, while a mid-winter or mid-summer job can often be scheduled inside the same week.
